Desert Dunes Water Reclamation Facility
CITY OF YUMA, ARIZONA
Highlights:
• Nutrient removal and high-efficiency effluent filtration.
• Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection.
• Effluent is used for irrigation reuse.
• Groundwater recharge and effluent disposal to the Colorado River.
• Plant aesthetic odor and noise control.
Carollo provided master planning, preliminary design, final design, and construction services for the 3-mgd phase I of the Desert Dunes WPCF. This high-tech water reclamation facility uses nutrient removal, high-efficiency effluent filtration, and ultraviolet disinfection to provide a quality of water suitable for a variety of uses including agricultural and irrigation reuse, groundwater recharge, and discharge to the Colorado River.

In 1999, the City and Carollo identified several effluent disposal alternatives for use and disposal of effluent treated by the Desert Dunes WPCF. Carollo performed an in-depth analysis for individual effluent disposal alternatives that led to the effluent disposal plan for the East Mesa area. It also incorporated a comprehensive water reuse program and expansion capacity evaluation in conjunction with the Jackrabbit Mesa WPCF.

The planning and design effort required land surveying, geotechnical investigation, coordination with utilities, and adjacent roadway design. The Carollo and City of Yuma team prepared and submitted Aquifer Protection Permit Applications.

The design features a number of “good neighbor” components addressing noise, odor, and visual impacts. Environmentally friendly landscaping and aesthetically sound architectural techniques allow the facility to blend in with the surrounding desert and community. The plant design includes standby power for electrical backup and controlled operation, and facilities to interface with the citywide SCADA system.

The Desert Dunes WPCF earned recognition from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Arizona and received the 2005 Engineering Excellence Grand Award.
