2015 Water Supply Improvements Project

South Island PSD 2015 Water Supply Improvements Project

A Water Supply Master Plan was completed by Carollo in June 2011 to address the loss of the District’s Upper Floridan Aquifer (UFA) supply wells due to salt water intrusion. Carollo developed and calibrated a hydraulic model of the existing system to evaluate the saltwater intrusion rate and required system improvements. Three phases of water supply improvements were identified.

The 2015 Water Supply Improvements Project, Phase 1, identified short term projects to be completed by 2015. As part of Phase 1, Carollo provided design and construction phase engineering services related to the development of three wells. A Middle Floridian Aquifer (MFA) reliability well provides a backup supply of groundwater to the District’s existing RO WTP. Two Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) wells store finished water from the District’s distribution system for use during the peak flow season (June-August). Hydraulic modeling identified the best location to place ASR wells to maximize the use of existing water resources and infrastructure. The 2015 Improvements Project was completed in late 2014 and has been successfully operational since then.
