PROJECT SHOWCASE: Deep Well Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) Project, Albuquerque, NM

Carollo Operations Specialists Steve Walker and Max Hildebrand were invited by Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority (ABCWUA) staff to observe the construction of the Authority's first ever deep well aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) project.

The Water Authority is using direct injection into the aquifer near its surface-water treatment plant, specifically at the Webster Pump Station and Reservoir. The well is over 1300 feet deep, with the pump being located at the 550 foot depth. The plan is to inject purified surface water into the well that has high arsenic concentrations to see if the water could be stored for use during droughts or other high demand times.

Manager of Plant Operations Charles Leder, P.E., stated, "Banking finished water will allow the Water Authority to maximize production from our San Juan-Chama Water Treatment Plant and to continue providing our customers high quality water during the extreme drought that Albuquerque and Bernalillo County are experiencing.
