The state of the art for analysis of mixing in the wastewater treatment industry has included computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis to predict velocities produced by different types of mixers. However, until recently, that state of the art had only extended to treating the wastewater as if it were clear water.
In a project for the JEA utility in Jacksonville, Florida, Carollo extended the CFD approach to include prediction of solids concentrations. It turns out that this makes all the difference in adequately predicting the efficiency of mixers in activated sludge reactor tanks.
