And despite the story saying that the region's coffee houses aren't to blame, the professor in charge of the research had this to say:

"There's no known source of caffeine in temperate zones, so there's nothing we can suggest as a sort of alternative hypothesis at this point except for a human source."

So if it isn't the local marine life succumbing to their urges for a venti soy no foam upside down caramel macchiato with extra whip, then we can only blame the surfers and swimmers, and we all know what they do when they're swimming, don't we?
