This article highlights the major differences between the existing Total Coliform Rule, and an EPA advisory committee’s recommended Revised Total Coliform Rule. Major differences are anticipated in rule construct, routine monitoring, self assessments, corrective actions, violations, and public notices. Public water systems can reduce their risk of embarrassing public notifications by identifying and correcting sanitary defects before the revised TCR takes effect. The article lists several operational strategies to correct the most common sanitary defects.
