UV Validation Facility
Carollo has completed the tenth large-scale UV reactor validation at its test facility at the City of Portland, Oregon’s, South Shore Well Field. Carollo’s facility has provided leadership in validation, developing new test microbes and UV-absorbing chemicals for optimized validation and developing standardized UV dose-monitoring algorithms for accurate and efficient regulatory compliance. The facility, open to all interested municipal utilities and UV vendors, has conducted over 800 challenge tests at reactor flow rates as high as 42 million gallons per day (mgd) and UV transmittance values ranging from 70 to 98 percent. This tenth reactor testing marks a milestone in the success of the testing facility and ensures that cities seeking large-scale reactor validation can comply with the Long-Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule.
USEPA UV Disinfection Guidance Manual
The USEPA contracted Carollo Engineers to write key sections of its UV Disinfection Guidance Manual (UVDGM), including all chapters and appendices on UV fundamentals, validation testing, pilot-scale and demonstration-scale testing, and major portions of the chapters on design, operation, and maintenance. Carollo’s leadership in UV technology has positioned the firm as the leading consultant in this domain and justifies its critical role in the development of the UV disinfection language for the Stage 2 Microbial/Disinfection By-products Rules. Carollo is in the process of finalizing the Validation sections of UVDGM in response to stakeholder feedback. Publication is expected in February 2006.
AwwaRF Knowledgebase Project
Carollo is the principal investigator on the research team conducting the Awwa Research Foundation’s (AwwaRF) UV Knowledgebase Project. This project is the seventh AwwaRF project with a UV disinfection focus awarded to Carollo over the last seven years. The Knowledgebase Project will collect and analyze data on the design, validation, performance, costs, and lessons learned from over 145 installed UV systems at municipal utilities across North America. The research team will develop standard methods for evaluating and troubleshooting UV systems performance and answer the important questions facing utilities, regulators, and engineers on UV system implementation. A final report will be forthcoming in 2007. Interested Utilities with installed UV disinfection systems are welcome to contact Carollo to participate in this project.
Carollo begins 2006 poised to continue its leadership position in drinking water UV research, regulations, validation, and design.
